First Workshop on Photonic Crystal Fiber Technology for Ultrafast Optics Applications

The workshop will be held at Institute of Electronic Materials Technology – member of the MSCA ITN “SUPUVIR” consortium.

The event will start on the 10th of April 2018 and will last three days. The aim of the workshop is to provide an introduction combined with real hands-on training in development of photonic crystal fibers, using the stack-and-draw approach.

The school will consist of three technological sessions dedicated to:

- stacking and clamping of preforms, 

- drawing of subpreforms and subpreform elements, 

- drawing of final fibers. 

Participants will be divided into three teams and each team will go through each of the steps. 

The teams will work with prior prepared components, ie. the team beginning with fiber drawing would work with ready preforms, the stacking team would use ready rods and tubes. The teams will rotate through the technological steps over the three consecutive days. Each technological day will include a 4h laboratory class delivering each team and each team member opportunity for hands-on exercise in fiber-optics stacking and drawing. 


The workshop is organized by Institute of Electronic Materials Technology,  in scope of the “SUPUVIR” project. The event will be held at Institute of Electronic Materials Technology, Glass Department, address: Wolczynska 133, 01-919 Warsaw, Poland.

A participation fee of 250 EUR will be collected from each student participant to cover cost of coffee breaks, lunches and dinners and materials.

The fee does not cover accommodation costs.

SUPUVIR Consortium supervisors and invited lecturers are exempt from the fee.

The workshop is organized for PhD students of the SUPUVIR consortium and they have priority at registration.  Participation applications from PhD students or postdocs from outside of SUPUVIR are possible and will be considered by the organizer upon registration. Maximum number of participants is limited.


SUPUVIR students: please send a filled registration form to Mariusz Klimczak and have the registration fee paid.

Students from outside of the SUPUVIR consortium, please email short CV in a pdf file and a brief statement of purpose in the email body, along with the registration form.

Team A: introduction to fiber drawing safety, setting up the equipment (preform attachment, purging of furnace, heat up), drawing of fiber, inspection
Team B: introduction to fiber drawing safety, setting up the equipment, drawing of preform elements – rods and tubes, sorting the elements
Team C: introduction to stacking, how a preform is designed, preparing work station, stacking elements into preforms, mounting preforms in attachment tubes

       14:00 – 15:00 lunch

       15:15 – 18:30 lectures with two coffee breaks (15 min.)
